In May 2021, the federal government of Canada issued a formal apology in the House of Commons to the Italian Canadians who had been declared enemy aliens in Word War 2 and to those who were removed from their families and interned in camps. Due to pandemic restriction at the time, Italian Canadians in North Bay and Northern Ontario were unable to recognise this apology in a way which educates the community about the injustice and ensures there will never be a comparable situation where innocent families are targeted. We plan this recognition in a series of events. The events also celebrate the recovery of the Italian community in Northern Ontario and its current importance in the fabric of our communities.
